Yates has scores of accomplishments
We are eagerly supporting Brian Yates for another term as an at-large alderman from Ward 5.
We have known Brian for many years. He pursues his work with quiet persistence and conviction. He has a disciplined work ethic and a strong moral sense of what’s right and wrong.
Brian’s public service stands out because Newton and all it represents has been the focus of his life and civic work from early childhood to his most recent term on the Board. Newton is simply a far better place because of Brian’s tireless and often courageous efforts over the years.
Brian has scores of accomplishments. He is:
A courageous and effective advocate for reasonable legal constraints on disruptive and even illegal large home development practices in Newton that have left a bitter legacy of anger and mistrust in many neighborhoods throughout the City.
A passionate leader for protecting the natural environment, open spaces, village centers, and historical treasures.
A vocal champion for farsighted energy conservation initiatives that have made Newton one of the leading “Green Communities” in Massachusetts.
An enthusiastic facilitator for responsible business development projects including the Chestnut Hill Square project, the Needham Street redevelopment, and several vibrant village projects like Dunn-Gaherin’s restaurant.
Brian wants another term to put his institutional knowledge to work to forge strong public and institutional support for addressing the many challenges Newton will almost certainly face in the years ahead. Brian not only knows whether something that is presented as “new” has been tried here before, but whether it worked or didn’t work, and why. Very few other people have the cross-generational vision for Newton that this gifted and decent man possesses.
