Blasting, Rock Removal and Noise

Some of you have contacted me concerning the impact of construction in your neighborhoods.

The noise ordinance restricts the sound of some elements of construction and is enforced by the Police Department (617-552-7258). Blasting is regulated by the Fire Prevention Bureau of the Fire Department (617-552-7275). The Inspectional Services Department enforces the Building Code and Zoning Ordinance (617-552-7014). If problems cannot be solved by these agencies, call the Citizen Assistance Office at (617) 552-7115. If all else fails, call me or any of the other Aldermen.

The extremely noisy construction project on Commonwealth Avenue opposite the Newton Cemetery and the clear-cutting of over 90 trees and the dumping of 100,000 square feet of fill up on  a parcel on Upland Road, point out the weaknesses to control major topographical changes within the Newton Zoning Ordinances. I have filed the following docket item to address this issue early in the upcoming new term.

#65-13 ALD. YATES, FISCHMAN, KALIS requesting that Chapter 30 be amended to require a special permit for major topographic changes. [02/12/13 @ 12:30 PM]
